Jones, born in Krefeld, Germany, recalls her parents background; her education in Germany, starting in 1952; her early employment as an apprentice secretary in a fashion clothing factory; catholicism in Germany; repercussions over family's political views, Grandfather having been goaled for socialist beliefs before the war; family decision to emigrate to Australia; life at Unanderra Migrant Hostel; life onboard the Flavia (ship) travelling to Melbourne, Vic.; their initial stay at Bonegilla Migrant Camp, Vic.; father found work at the BHP steelworks, Illawarra (N.S.W.); mother & children having been sent to Villawood Hostel till advised they could join father; family move to Kieraville, Illawarra (N.S.W.)
Jones speaks about the role of the German Club in assisting migrants & the family's involvement in the Club; English lessons at the Wollongong centre; father's initial employment experiences; father employed as tour guide at BHP, the company also making use of his artistic abilities, desiging the BHP logo & various safety symbols for use in the workplace; the advertisment "You say the Word" Migrant English Television programme, her work as an actor for the series; her suucessful approach to the New South Wales Adult Migrant Education Service (AMES) for a language teaching position; her duties on the programme; her views on situational English as a teaching method; more recent teaching methods & expectations.
