Garrett, a Law graduate & former lead singer of the rock band Midnight Oil which expressed the band's political conscience through the lyrics of it's music. He recalls his family's background, his parents having an active interest in political and social issues; graduating with a B.A. in Law 1977 from the Australian National University (A.N.U.), Canberra; his interest in music while at A.N.U.; his first tour with Midnight Oil in Dec. 1977. Garrett speaks about the source of material for their music being life experiences they had witnessed through touring Australia. He recalls some of the band's more interesting experiences & concerts, eg Sydney Olympic 2000 performance. Garrett speaks about the band's unique style of music, the political & environmental focus of their songwriting.
Garrett talks about his two terms as President, Australian Conservation Foundation (2nd term 1998); his role as an advocate for environmental issues; his role as a member of the International Board of Greenpeace and as an adviser to the Australian Human Rights Foundation; his views on political issues such as reconciliation, republicanism, the Constitutional Convention.
