Ralph Elliott, Emeritus professor of English, talks about his family background, growing up during the Hitler regime, leaving Germany in 1936 to join relatives in Scotland, the story behind his anglicized surname and his internment in Canada in 1940. He describes his wartime experiences with the Allied Pioneer Corps and the Queen's Royal Regiment, graduation from St Andrew's University, Scotland in 1949 and his work at St Andrew's and University College of North Staffordshire before moving to the University of Adelaide in 1959. Elliott discusses his experiences at University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the Australian National University as well as his writings on aspects of the English language and associated activites such as the Australian National Word Festival.
