Fox recalls his family background, his father's soap factory; his father's work as a shearer who turned to horse training when he hurt his back; his schooling; racing in Grafton at 14 years of age being of tall but light build; being apprenticed to his father; details of jockey apprenticeships in the 1950s, explaining how the weight allowance worked; his first winning rides in Sydney; Gold Fiddle, last horse to win twice in one day; how racing was different before the introduction of the T.A.B.; "tricks"used to spur the horses on to run faster; champion horses; the incredible affinity between professional jockeys and horses; training methods of the old trainers; his skills as a trainer and how he gained his experience; having ridden 1,670 winners, listing racecources where he rode; having never rode in a Melbourne Cup; his battles with weight.
He speaks about the Hong Kong horse racing experience and his change in status from amateur to professional; horse nobbling ie race fixing; the old system when only members of the Jockey Club could race horses; personalities of the racing industry; how the bookmakers operated; folklore of the racing track; the racing industry in Hong Kong and Singapore; Inverell Cup; humour among the racing fraternity, money being hard to come by in the old days; track work; stable jockeys and freelance riders.
