A collection of chiefly printed ephemera concerned with the issues and debate for the four questions asked at the referendum held on 3 September 1988: to increase the terms for members of the House of Representatives to four years, to reduce the term of senators to a four-year fixed term, and to ensure simultaneous elections for both chambers (not carried); to guarantee democratic electoral arrangements for Commonwealth, State and Territory elections (not carried); to give constitutional recognition to local government (not carried); and to guarantee various civil rights relating to trials, freedom of religion and compulsory acquisition of property (not carried). The referendum was not held in conjunction with a federal election.
