Our opening hours will be changing between Tuesday 24 December 2019 and Wednesday 1 January 2020.

All reading rooms will be closed from Christmas Day, reopening on 2 January. But you’ll still be able to visit our Exhibition Galleries, our children’s holiday space, WordPlay, and Bookshop from 9am-5pm (except on Christmas Day).Bookplate café will also be open during this period, but with varied hours.

Summary

Dr Nick Deacon, Head of the AIDS Molecular Biology Unit, National Centre for HIV Virology Research, Macfarlane Burnet Centre for Medical Research, speaks on his Unit's recent discovery which may lead to the development of a live attenuated vaccine and therapeutic drugs for those already infected with HIV-1; discusses the moral implications of such a vaccine; the necessity of sufficient guaranteed funding to ensure continued "basic research" (the essential basis of their own discovery); and answered questions on the nature of the potential vaccine; overseas reaction and support; and possible sponsorship and commercial aspects.
