MS 6498 comprises diaries and papers. The diaries were kept on overseas trips between 1946-1984. Countries visited included the United States, United Kingdom, France, Brazil, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Syme was usually accompanied by Lady Syme and sometimes by directors and managers of BHP, such as L. Gordon Darling and Geoffrey Heeley. Most volumes have indexes of people met and places visited.
In addition, there are files of correspondence, minutes and papers relating to many of the organisations with which Syme was associated. They include BHP, the Australian Science and Technology Council (ASTEC), Elder Smith Goldsbrough Mort Ltd, Order of Australia Association, Private Investment Company for Asia (PICA), Royal Melbourne Hospital, Committee of Inquiry into Health Services in Victoria, 1973-1983, and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (23 boxes).
- Biography/History:

Solicitor and company director. Colin York Syme was director of BHP Co. Ltd from 1937 until 1971, chairman of directors, BHP Co. Ltd, 1952-1971, director of Elder Smith Goldsbrough Mort Ltd, 1962-1975, and president of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research from 1961-1978. Syme died at Howqua, Victoria in 1986.
