MS 5166 comprises correspondence, reports, drafts of Stone's works, lecture material, broadcasts, reviews, cuttings and photographs relating to law, international affairs, politics and education. Although there are significant papers relating to Stone's early years, including his lecture notes written whilst a student at the Universities of Oxford, Leeds and Harvard, the bulk of the collection dates from 1942 when he was appointed Challis Professor of International Law and Jurisprudence at the University of Sydney. It relates to every phase of Stone's life, documenting his work as an academic, administrator, counsel, commentator and author. Drafts, typescripts and galley proofs of most of his legal books and articles form a large part of the collection. Other papers relate to Stone's work for Judaism and Israel (343 boxes, 2 fol. boxes, 4 map folios, 1 fol. packet).
- Biography/History:

Lawyer and professor of law. Julius Stone was born at Leeds, Yorkshire in 1907. He was a Master of Laws student at the University of Leeds and in 1936 graduated as a Doctor of Civil Law from Oxford University. He was Dean of Law at Auckland University College prior to his appointment to the University of Sydney Law School where he was Challis Professor of International Law and Jurisprudence from 1942 until 1972. He was also a visiting professor at Hastings College of Law in California, and following his retirement in 1972, became Professor of Law at the University of New South Wales. He was the author of a number of books and numerous articles on law and international relations. In 1973 he was awarded an OBE and in 1981 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). Stone died at Rose Bay, Sydney in 1985.
