Patrick James O'Farrell was born in Greymouth, New Zealand in 1933 and graduated from the University of Canterbury and with a doctorate from the Australian National University before joining the University of New South Wales in 1959. He was Professor of History at the University of New South Wales from 1972-1999, and became Emeritus Scientia Professor of History upon retirement. Subsequent research work covered Australian Catholicism, Anglo-Irish relations and the history of the Australian Irish. Among O'Farrell's published works are Harry Holland, militant socialist (1964), The Catholic Church in Australia: a short history 1788-1967 (1968), Ireland's English question: Anglo-Irish relations 1534-1971 (1971), The Catholic Church and community: an Australian history (1985), and Through Irish eyes: Australian and New Zealand images of the Irish 1788-1948 (1994). His The Irish in Australia (1986) won the NSW Premier's Literary Award in 1987 and the Ernest Scott Prize for Australian History. He also edited several publications and served on the editorial boards of the Journal of religious history and the Australasian Catholic record. O'Farrell died in Sydney in 2003.
