John Bannon was appointed president of the Australian Union of Students in 1968. After university he held various government advisory positions until elected as an ALP representative to the South Australian parliament in 1977. He became Premier of South Australia in 1982, a position he held until 1992, making him that state's longest serving premier. After resigning from parliament in 1992 he became a director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1994.
