The records in MS 4985 mainly consist of the correspondence of the Federal Secretary, 1936-1977, and papers documenting meetings of the Federal Conference, 1919-1984, and Federal Executive, 1944-1979. In addition there are circulars, subject files, cuttings, publications, photographs, including photographs of H.V. Evatt and the 1975 Federal Conference delegates at Terrigal, papers associated with the Socialist International, financial records, papers on state, federal and pre-selection elections, a file of the Federal President's correspondence, 1970, and albums of cuttings that cover the 1917 No conscription campaign and include minutes of the Federal Standing Advisory Committee, 1939-1943 (577 boxes, 3 fol. boxes, 3 fol. volumes).
The Acc05.091 instalment comprises correspondence with sub-branches and state branches, correspondence of individuals including D.H. Combe, Ian Henderson, Bob Hogg, Gary Gray and Candy Broad, international correspondence, election files and material, Federal Executive agendas and minutes, committee files, conference reports and papers, issue papers, council and seminar papers, state information, GST files and Mabo files (103 cartons).
The Acc11.105 instalment comprises papers pertaining to the Federal Secretariat and the Australian Labor Party as an organisation including: 1993 election policy documents and advertising; ALP 40th National Conference; national platforms on economic development, social development, natural resources, transport and communication; correspondence of the National Secretary; National Executive Committee correspondence and meeting papers (51 boxes).
The Acc12.142 instalment comprises records of Australian Labor Party Federal Secretariat including: National Executive correspondence and meeting documents; state branch correspondence; election campaign advertising materials, correspondence, planning documents, reports, submissions and questionnaires (41 boxes).

The Federal Parliamentary Labor Party was formed in 1901 and in 1950 the Federal Conference of the Party established a Federal Executive to be the administrative authority in carrying out the decisions of the Conference and in the interpretation of the constitution. Archibald Stewart was elected first Federal Secretary of the Party in 1915. It was not until 1963 that Cyril Wyndham was elected the first full time Federal Secretary.
