Papers of Charles Fitzgerald relating to his Governorship of Western Australia; and Valentine Cary Elwes concerning amateur theatricals in Perth.

Copies of official despatches from Charles Fitzgerald to Lord Grey (Aug. 1848 to Dec. 1851) with reference to: arrival in Perth; exploration; applications for emigrants; mineral discoveries; import duties; arrival and disposal of convicts; arrival of Roman Catholic mission from Spain; transmission of reports; regulations and newspapers; appointments; discovery of guano at Sharks Bay; establishment of Convict Department; Aboriginal prisoners; applications for female convicts; erection of lighthouses; postage rates; memorial of T. Peel.

Miscellaneous papers: including a letter from Charles Fitzgerald to Lord Grey, 20 Dec. 1849 giving account of expedition to Champion Bay and Murchison River; proceedings of a meeting, chared by V. Cary Elwes, to organise amateur theatricals in Perth, 8 May 1854; theatre bills of three amateur theatricals held at the Court House, Perth, 8 May 1854; and the letters of Sarah Dyett (Perth) to V. Cary Elwes, 1855-59.

Biography/History

Charles Fitzgerald (1791-1887) was Governor of Western Australia 1848-1855. In 1848 he married Eleanora Elwes, the sister of Valentine Cary Elwes (1832-1909).
