Summary

MS 4738 comprises correspondence, reports, personal documents, minutes, cuttings, family documents, photographs, subject files, biographical files, invitations, speeches, publications, an original Jeff cartoon and objects (official gifts). The papers cover Calwell's entire career, including his early involvement in the Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party, Australian Public Service Association and the Melbourne City Council.

There are extensive papers relating to the Curtin and Chifley ministries and particularly the information and immigration portfolios. Later papers relate to elections, divisions within the ALP, relations with the Catholic Church, immigration, education, the Vietnam War and overseas visits (287 boxes, 5 fol. boxes, 2 fol. items, 1 folio).

The Acc04.135 instalment comprises God bless you melodies by G. Cera and H. Modotti, dedicated to A. Calwell, 1943; two addresses from immigrant groups and a menu, 1948-1949; correspondence of Calwell, mainly with Catholic priests, 1945-1965; photographs of Mary Elizabeth Calwell; and, printed ephemera relating to the Arthur Calwell Memorial Lecture, 2003 (1 A3 carton).

The Acc07.198 instalment comprises correspondence received and sent by Calwell, 1938-1970. Correspondents include Douglas MacArthur, R.G. Menzies, Alec Masel, B.A. Santamaria, J.D. Simmons, H.S. Truman and L.J. Hartnett. Also, letters written by Daniel and Davis Calwell to their family at various times including their journey from New York to Australia and later from Ballarat, New South Wales, 1853-1855, including references to Eureka Stockade and the "gold rushes". Further correspondence by Daniel and Davis Calwell to and from their family in Australia and America, 1853-1899. The instalment includes photographs of Daniel and Davis Calwell, Arthur Calwell and others and correspondence received by Calwell including a note from R.G. Menzies re Evatt (1 box).

Biography/History

Politician. Arthur Augustus Calwell was Labor Member for the House of Representatives from 1940-1972. He succeeded H.V. Evatt as leader of the Federal Parliamentary Labor Party in 1960, resigning in 1967. Further biographical information at http://trove.nla.gov.au/people/638939
