Summary

MS 9189 comprises correspondence, 1940-1998; speeches, 1968-1990, with subjects including heritage conservation, human rights, the legal profession and university activities; photographs, ca. 1950-1990; press cuttings, 1965-1984; small portion of a copy of R.M. Hope's publication, The right of peaceful assembly (1972); a roneoed bound set of the Legal digest (1941-1945); and other personal papers including material about Hope's retirement, 1990 (3 boxes).

Biography/History

Lawyer and Royal Commissioner. Robert Marsden Hope was judge of the New South Wales Supreme Court from 1972 until 1992. He was appointed chancellor of the University of Wollongong in 1975, retaining the position until 1997. He was also chairman of the New South Wales Heritage Council, 1978-1993, and the New South Wales Law Reform Commission, 1990-1993. During his career Hope conducted the following inquiries: Committee of Inquiry into the National Estate, 1973-1975; Royal Commission on Intelligence and Security, 1975-1978; Protective Security Review, 1979; and, the Royal Commission on Australia's Security and Intelligence Agencies, 1983-1985.
