Bringing them home oral history project.

Summary

Lees was one of five children removed from their mother's care in 1958. Initially they were placed in an orphanage in Townsville, Qld. where the youngest was immediately adopted by a white family. The other children were told, however, that their sister had died. Lees' other sister was fostered, but she and her two brothers were sent to Palm Island. She speaks about living conditions on Palm Island and about her mentor Father Cassian Double. She also describes her efforts to reunite her family and the shock of discovering that the sister who she thought was dead was in fact alive. Lees was the first Aboriginal woman to join the Navy. She later married and raised four children. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Mt Isa Aboriginal Legal Service.
