O'Brien, a journalist, theatre critic, author born at Bexhill-on-sea, England recalls childhood memories in wartime England; his work as a journalist in Fleet Street, London 1948-1950; his introduction to theatre in England; emigrating to Australia in 1950, working as a farm labourer in Queensland; early days as a journalist & feature writer for various local & city newspapers throughout New South Wales, Tasmania & Queensland; his move to Sydney to work for The Sunday Telegraph & The Daily Telegraph, working as theatre reviewer & arts editor 1962-1966; writing the Ray Castle column 1966-1968 ; his move to The Bulletin Magazine 1968-1972, as feature writer under the editorship of Donald Horne.
O'Brien speaks about how he began in 1972 a career as a freelance journalist, specialising in arts, entertainment and popular culture; his work as a writer and adviser to entrepreneur Harry M. Miller (late 1960's-early 1980's); his position as Director, Arts Information, for The Australia Council (1974-1975); Special Advisor to the Queen's Silver Jubilee Authority (1976-1977); official historian for The Australian Bicentennial Authority (1988-1990); his work as an author.
