Bringing them home oral history project.

Summary

Whittaker, a champion football player and Indigenous adopted child, speaks about his Aboriginal mother and his father, a station owner. He was raised in Perth by his father's wife and had almost no contact with his father. He became a champion footballer and moved to Melbourne in his early 20s to play professionally for Footscray. Following his retirement from football in 1970, he settled in Adelaide and worked as an insurance salesman until 1993. He first realised he was adopted when he applied for his birth certificate and received two, one with his birth mother's name and the other with his adoptive mother's name. He describes meeting his birth mother who was already blind and who had had all of her children taken from her. Whittaker discusses his work with Aboriginal footballers and his views on the policy of removal.
