"A sermon, II. Chronicles Chap. 29th: 10-11, preached, at St. John's by the Revd. Samuel Marsden, Principal Chaplain, on the 19th day of November 1815". Marsden's sermon on the death of Ellis Bent, whose "labours have been a great public blessing during his residence amongst us", opens with a passage from II Chronicles 29, verses 10-11.
The text of the sermon is followed by an extract from the Sydney Gazette of 11 November 1815 in which the Governor of New South Wales refers to "the severe loss sustained by the Colony, at large, in the decease of a gentleman, who has for nearly six years, presided in its law courts, with equal honour to himself, and advantage to the public" and states his intention to attend the burial.

Ellis Bent (1783-1815) was Judge-Advocate of New South Wales from 1809 to 1814. He died in Sydney on 10 November 1815.

Title from manuscript title-leaf. Includes two final unnumbered pages reproducing an official announcement of the time.
