Inscribed to the memory of Ellis Bent by his affectionate widow. Verso appears to be a draft inscription.
Text: Sacred to the memory of Elllis Bent Esq AM of Peter House in the University of Cambridge, Judge Advocate and Judge of the Vice Admiralty in this Colony who was born 26 March 1783 and died 15 November 1815 in the thirty second year of his age. Thus early exhausted by the anxieties and labours of his public duties. As a judge his decisions were marked by impartiality and talent. As a magistrate his justice was tempered by a compassionate disposition. As a man esteemed for suavity of manners and liberality of conduct. His memory ... His memory remains impressed on the hearts of his friends.

Ellis Bent (1783-1815) was Judge-Advocate of New south Wales from 1809 to 1814. As an arts student at Cambridge University, Bent had resided at Peterhouse.
