Diary written on board the "John Williams III" on a voyage to Sydney, 1869-1870, with descriptions of islands visited in the South Pacific. As well as the diary there are photocopies of Runcie's death certificate, transcript of a newspaper article written on his retirement, obituaries of Runcie and his wife Isabella and a poem written to Isabella Runcie.
- Biography/History:

Seaman. Born in Cullen, Scotland, James Runcie was apprenticed as a ship builder in Aberdeen. He first visited Australia aboard the "John Williams II", and again upon the "John Williams III", where he attained the rank of first officer. Later, as captain of the missionary schooner "Ellengowan", he accompanied Samuel McFarlane and Luigi D'Albertis on their exhibition to the Fly River in New Guinea. After returning to Australia, Runcie spent the remainder of his career commanding cargo ships in the South Pacific for companies such as Burns Philp and the Australian New Hebrides Company. Runcie died in Sydney in his eightieth year.
