Allan Cunningham was a significant plant collector and explorer in Australia between 1816 and 1839. He sailed with Phillip Parker King on five voyages around the coast, explored extensively in Tasmania, New South Wales and what is now south-eastern Queensland, and visited Norfolk Island. In all he gathered more than 3000 plant collections. Although he made far better field notes than most of his contemporaries, these were not always transcribed onto the herbarium sheets bearing his specimens, some of his place names have changed, and tracing his localities has not been easy. Until recently there has been no systematic compilation of his journeys.

-
- Using the base map of John Oxley published in 1825, Allan Cunningham created this manuscript map making his annotations between 1827 and 1832 on both sides of the 1825 base map. Those on the upper part of the map refer primarily to the course of the Condamine River as well as the Dumaresqu River [later recognised as the early part of the Darling River where it arises in south east Queensland]. He shows that the Castlereagh River on the map connects to the Darling River, which in turn connects with the Dumaresqu River and the Gwydir River. The lower sheet centred on New South Wales contains much fewer notes, with some reference to the Murrumbidgee River. His notes also make comments on Thomas Mitchell's recent discoveries in north east New South Wales. Cunningham was the first to cite the Darling Downs on a map.
- Base map published in 1825 by John Oxley charts New South, Queensland and Victoria, extending from Westernport to Moreton Bay, showing routes of Howe, Meehan and Oxley between 1817 and 1820. Relief shown by hachures, spot heights and printed notes.
- Base map originally published: London : Published June 4th 1825, by A. Arrowsmith, Hydrographer to His Majesty, No. 10 Soho Square, 1825.
- Base map includes a dedication in the upper left of the top sheet: To the Right Honourable the Earl Bathurst, K.G. one of His Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State, this map of the interior discoveries hitherto made in New South Wales, under His Lordship's auspices, is with his Lordship's permission most respectfully inscribed by his very obedient humble servant John Oxley. Sydney N.S.W. Feby. 2nd 1824.
