Summary

The papers cover Hazlehurst's education and career, his publications and many of the projects with which he has been involved. The papers relating to publications include Politicians at war (1971), Reforming Australian government (1977), Menzies observed (1979), The mastermind book (1979), Australian conservatism (1979) and Gordon Chalk: a political life (1987). Other projects represented in the papers include Hazlehurst's work on the "Political records project" and the BBC television series The British empire. There is an extensive series of outward correspondence, as well as correspondence with literary agents and publishers. The juvenilia includes some primary school material by Hazlehurst's sister, the actress Noni Hazlehurst.

The Acc 97/282 papers relate to Hazlehurst's following appointments: First Assistant Secretary, Communications Strategy Division, Commonwealth Department of Communications, 1984-1986; consultant to the Royal Commission on Broadcasting and Related Telecommunications, 1985; consultant on history and archives of Australian official statistics, and the proposed Bicentennial Year Book of Australia, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1983; National Campaign Director, AIDS Education and Information, Department of Community Services and Health, 1988-1989; Australian National University, 1976-1996; and, Queensland Electoral and Administrative Review Commission, 1992-1993.

Biography/History

Historian, academic, public affairs consultant and author. Dr Hazlehurst was foundation Professor and Head of the School of Humanities at Queensland University of Technology in 1992-1997. His previous positions included Fellow and Senior Fellow in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University from 1972 to 1992, and Lecturer in Politics, University College, Oxford in 1969-1972. Hazlehurst has served in various government posts and has undertaken policy consulting roles with both state and federal government agencies. He has written extensively on Australian and British government and political history. His publications include, Reforming Australian government: the Coombs report and beyond (edited with J.R. Nethercote, 1977), Menzies observed (1979), and, Australian conservatism: essays in twentieth century political history (ed., 1979). Since 1999 Hazlehurst has been managing director of public affairs and communications management company, Flaxton Mill House Pty Ltd.
