Stanislaw Kowalski, civil engineer, recalls his work with the National Capital Development Commission (NCDC) during 1987-1991 mainly in much of the design and construction of suburbs and also the township of Tuggeranong; his current job as a self-employed Consulting Engineer after his retirement from the NCDC in 1991; his involvement in Polish community organisations, his reactions to his first return to Poland and his views on multiculturalism.
Kowalski speaks of his memories of life in Poland, especially during the German occupation in World War II; having graduated as Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Gdansk in Poland 1952; various projects in Poland, including as project manager (1962-1964) he worked in the African state of Ghana; returning to work in Gdansk (1965-1971); his work prior to coming to Australia (1983) on major projects in Entebbe, (Uganda), Vienna (Austria), New York (U.S.A.) and Nairobi (Kenya); 1984, he was Senior Engineer for the Glenn Innes Water Supply Scheme in New South Wales; 1985-86 he was Senior Engineer with the Dept. of Housing and Construction (Canberra, A. C.T.); 1986-87 he was Senior Engineer on the Kingsford Smith Airport extension project.
