Our opening hours will be changing between Tuesday 24 December 2019 and Wednesday 1 January 2020.

All reading rooms will be closed from Christmas Day, reopening on 2 January. But you’ll still be able to visit our Exhibition Galleries, our children’s holiday space, WordPlay, and Bookshop from 9am-5pm (except on Christmas Day).Bookplate café will also be open during this period, but with varied hours.

Len Crawford speaks about his adoption and family background; his childhood; religion, spirituality and art; his schooling; his early drawing; his work life; the Great Depression; the Australian Communist Party; the Worker's Theatre Group; attending Sidney Nolan's first exhibition; his involvement with ballet productions; World War II; working in the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories; landscape painting in Hobart while staying with Edith Holmes; Gino Nibbi; taking art classes with Mary Mercer; living with Nancy Roberts; developing his artistic skills; exhibiting at the Rowden White Library in 1948, and at the Kozminsky Gallery in 1950; Melbourne and Sydney art circles; exhibiting with the Contemporary Arts Society in Sydney in 1939; his preference for abstract painting; his desire to compose music and playing the piano; his collection of contemporary music; attending music concerts and ballet; The Contemporary Art Society; exhibiting at the Gallery of Contemporary Art in 1956; teaching art at Junior Technical Colleges; gardening and reading; the painting 'Captive Phoenix'.

Crawford discusses the painting 'Solemn & Harmonic'; designing a cover for Ern Malley's Journal; work held by the National Gallery of Australia; reviews; overseas travel and its influence on painting; living and painting in Highgate in 1963; exhibiting at Heal's Gallery in London; teaching at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology; teaching art to troubled children; writing; retirement and purchasing a house; happiness, humour, physical fitness and ambition; his appreciation of work by others; a missing series of Aboriginal-style paintings; works borrowed by an Aboriginal group for their first float in the Moomba Procession; Australian abstract painters; being open and receptive towards art; the effect of future changes to tertiary education on art schools; exhibiting at the Chapman Powell Street Gallery in 1970; portraits of Crawford by other artists; self-portraits; the public appreciation and knowledge of his work.
