MS 9029 comprises a small collection of personal papers that includes Hume's doctoral thesis titled "The Reconstruction Committee and the Ministry of Reconstruction during the First World War", seminar papers and book reviews by Hume, published papers by Hume and others on Benthanism, and a typescript copy of a paper by P.K. Sharp.
The Acc GB 1994/2308 instalment includes research notes, correspondence, lecture notes, course outlines, articles, reports and other papers.

Public servant, political scientist and academic. Leonard John Hume (1926-1993) gained his PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and worked as a research officer in the Prime Minister's Department from 1950-1958. He was a senior economist in the Bureau of Agricultural Economics from 1958-1961. In 1961 Hume returned to academic life and from 1961-1965 he was Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the Australian National University and then Reader in Political Science from 1965-1988. He was Acting Head of the ANU Department of Political Science during the 1970s. Hume was a specialist on the thought of Jeremy Bentham, the eighteenth century English utilitarian philosopher. Hume's publication, Bentham and bureaucracy (Cambridge University Press, 1981) is recognised as the classic study of Bentham's political thought.
