Summary

MS 195 comprises correspondence, letters patent and other documents relating to the legal and other activities of Ellis and Jeffery Hart Bent. Included in the collection are two journals of voyages to New South Wales undertaken by Ellis Bent in 1809, and by J.H. Bent in 1814. There is also a sermon on the death of Ellis Bent preached by the Reverend Samuel Marsden.

Biography/History

Ellis Bent (1783-1815) was Judge-Advocate of New South Wales, 1809-1814. Ellis Bent was the younger brother of Jeffery Hart Bent. Jeffery Hart Bent (1781-1852) was the first judge of New South Wales, 1814-1817, and Chief Justice of British Guiana from 1836-1852.
