MS 1578 comprises correspondence, research notes, addresses, bibliographies, lectures and collected historical documents relating to Colin Roderick's work as an author, historian and editor. The collection includes material on various subjects including James Tucker, Jane New, censorship, the Chair of Australian Literature, defamation, Miles Franklin, Australian short story and travel, Roderic Quinn memorial, Australian novelists, Alexander Harris, Mrs Campbell Praed and John Knatchbull. Also included are G.B. Lancaster letters and Mary Gilmore documents and letters (54 boxes, 75 fol. volumes, 5 cartons).
The Acc98.218 instalment comprises general correspondence and personal documents of Roderick, mostly dating from 1965-1986, manuscripts of The real Henry Lawson and Henry Lawson: a life, transcripts of radio broadcasts by Roderick, transcripts and copies of writings and newspapers articles of and letters about E.J. Banfield, Louis Becke and Lawson, a collection of photographs, and miscellaneous papers such as transcripts of letters of Frances Suttor (1845-1940) (3 large boxes).
The Acc99.030 instalment consists of further research material assembled by Roderick (3 large boxes).
The Acc99.071 instalment includes original manuscripts of James Tucker's plays Jimmy Green in Australia, and The Grahame's vengeance, sheet music of "Budgee" and Heenzo broadsheet (1 fol. packet).
The Acc99.174 instalment comprises papers relating to Roderick's research on Lawson, Leichhardt, Paterson, Hauser, Bauer and Dumont d'Urville (2 boxes, 4 cartons).
The Acc99.242 instalment includes research papers on Banjo Paterson and the author's original manuscript of Banjo Paterson: poet by accident, Jack Keith Murray research papers and correspondence concerning J.K. Murray, material relating to the Foundation for Australian Literary Studies, and photographs of Miles Franklin, Henry Lawson and others (13 boxes, 1 med. fol. box).
The Acc01.095 instalment constitutes further papers of Professor Roderick and comprises manuscript and research material of a book on A.B. Paterson's ancestors constructed from their correspondence (unpublished), research material, correspondence, manuscript and synopsis of Roderick's book on J.K. Murray (unpublished), material on Henry Lawson by Dame Mary Gilmore and others, correspondence, often with copies of Roderick's letters and replies, and further research material covering the period from the early 1950s-2000 (8 boxes).
The Acc02.167 instalment comprises manuscripts, papers relating to the wording of "Waltzing Matilda", research material, typescripts, correspondence, material concerning Louis Becke and Miles Franklin, photographs of literary figures or significant literary moments, scrapbooks, card indexes, and two guardbooks and a project book containing clippings. The correspondents are Sir Donald Bradman, Arthur Morris, Geoffrey Blainey, John Ferguson, Gavin Souter, Sir Garfield Barwick, Sir John Kerr, Michael Wilding, Patricia Clarke, Leslie Rees, J.K. Murray, Tom Thompson, Patrick Gallagher, F.S. Becke, Jenny Coren, Deborah Nixon, Jacqueline Kent, Barbara Ker Wilson, Russell Smythe and several European academics (2 boxes, 2 A3 boxes, 11 small cartons, 1 fol. box).
The Acc05.059 instalment includes letters, 1993 and 1996, to Roderick from Lynn Arnold, Wayne Goss, Sir Harry Gibbs, Don Bradman and Barbara Ross. There are also cutting books containing newspaper reviews, 1896-1914, of poetry by Henry Lawson (2 volumes) and A.B. Paterson (1 volume). The cuttings, taken from Australian and English newspapers, were pasted into the books by George Robertson's secretary, Miss Wiley, of Angus and Robertson (1 box).
- Biography/History:

Author, academic and historian. Colin Roderick was the author of many critical works of Australian literary periods, biographies of Banjo Paterson, Ludwig Leichhardt and Miles Franklin, and the foremost authority on Henry Lawson about whom he wrote a biography and edited definitive editions of his verse and prose. He worked as the education editor at the publishing firm Angus and Robertson from 1945-1965 and as director of publishing at the same company from 1961-1965. In 1965 he was appointed foundation Professor of English at University College Townsville (later James Cook University) and held that position until retirement in 1976. He established the Foundation for Australian Literary Studies, whose annual lecture series and literary prize now bear his name. During the 1970s Roderick was a visiting professor at European universities. He became a judge of the Miles Franklin Award, 1957-1991, and a member of many literary societies both in Australia and Europe. In 1966 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Australian Literature Society in 1974. Roderick died in Townsville, Queensland, in 2000.
