- Summary:
-
Tonkin speaks about his childhood on a farm at Essendon, Vic. and about his early interest in Aboriginal people and culture. He left home at the age of 12 or 13 and went to work on his uncle's farm at Walgett, N.S.W. Later he and his older brother worked their way through Queensland and the Gulf country, before returning to Victoria where they bought 800 acres on Jackson's Track in the West Gippsland and began a sawmill. He speaks about Stewart Hood, an Aboriginal man they employed and about moving Hood's family from Lake Tyers Mission to Jackson's Track. Many other Aboriginal people also moved to Jackson's Track and a small Aboriginal community developed. Tonkin speaks about his relationship with Hood's daughter Euphemia, their life together, and their family. He also speaks of driving to Echuca to move Indigenous children in danger of being taken by 'Welfare'.
Tonkin recalls that in the late 1950s, a public road was constructed close to the community, increasing the amount of outside contact and scrutiny. He describes the negative effect the road had on the community. In late 1961, the Shire Council compelled many families to move closer to town. He describes the effect this relocation had on the families involved. Tonkin eventually sold much of his land on Jackson's Track. He speaks about the book he wrote entitled 'Jackson's Track', which may eventually become a film.
