Anna Wierzbicka, Professor of Linguistics, Australian National University speaks about post-War UNRRA program in Poland; research & academic life in Warsaw; her studies in Moscow (1965) & the United States (1966-67); "liberalization" of Poland (1956); her migration to Australia in 1972; Polish community in Canberra; political and cultural changes in Poland during the 1980s-1990s; Australian citizenship; her professional and personal interest in Australian culture; recognition of her academic achievements.
Professor Wierzbicka recalls her childhood & family in Warsaw, Poland during 1938-1944; her childhood memories of the German occupation of Warsaw, the Warsaw Uprising (August 1944); her formal schooling during World War II; family experiences during and after the War; an anecdote about her childhood interest in dictionaries with her father; the political backdrop to formal education in Poland during the late 1940-early 1950s; her admission to Warsaw University & learning the Russian language at school.

Anna Wierzbicka, born in Poland in 1938, migrated to Australia in 1972 and was appointed in 1989 as Professor in Linguistics, Australian National University; she has also authored more than 20 books published in English, Polish and Russian with an international reputation for her work in semantics, syntax, pragmatics and the interrelation between language and culture.
