Edward Combes (1830-1895), engineer, pastoralist, politician and painter, was born on 6 September 1830 at Fonthill-Gifford, Wiltshire, England. He initially migrated to Victoria in 1851, returning to Europe to further his career as an engineer, then returning to Victoria in 1857. In 1858 he joined the New South Wales public service.
