Papers relating to the history of the Australian shale oil industries accumulated by Cane while researching his contribution to the book "The oil shales of the world - their origin, occurence & exploitation", 1990. They include correspondence, mostly relating to research material, an edited typescript of Cane's chapter for the book entitled 'Oil shales of Australia', research notes, journals, newspaper clippings, typescript extracts from various sources and photocopies of book chapters, journal articles, reports and papers. There are also photocopies of historical articles, some dating from the 16th century, and others from the late 1800s.

Reginal Cane is an academic and world authority on fossil fuels. He holds three science degrees, including a Doctorate of Science from the University of Tasmania. He commenced his research on oil shale in 1936, and has contributed widely to the literature on this topic. He was the first worker to establish the modern concept of the pyrolysis of oil shale kerogen. In 1979 he retired from the position of Dean of the School of Applied Science at the Queensland Institute of Technology. Following this he held professorial appointments in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and with the University of Tasmania.
