- Biography/History:
-
Architect Arthur George Stephenson established an architectural practice with Percy Hayman Meldrum in Melbourne in 1921. The firm, Stephenson and Meldrum, designed a pavilion for the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the State Savings Bank building and Freemasons Hospital in Melbourne City. After Meldrum withdrew from the partnership in 1937 the firm became Stephenson and Turner, with Arthur Stephenson and Donald Keith Turner as partners. The business, which still trades as Stephenson and Turner, came to specialise in hospital and industrial architecture and, by the 1980s, had expanded overseas into Australasia. Stephenson was knighted in 1954 and appointed KBE in 1964. He is commemorated by the Sir Arthur G. Stephenson Award for Commercial Architecture of the Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter).
