MS 1884 comprises correspondence, diaries, notebooks, drafts of manuscripts, subject files, press cuttings, pamphlets, souvenirs, printed items, photographs, glass slides and other memorabilia relating to all aspects of General Sir John Monash's life and career. The collection includes juvenilia and items dating from Monash's school and university days. The correspondents include Hannah Victoria Moss (whom he married in 1891), J.T.N. Anderson (business partner), Mathilda Monash (sister) and other members of the Monash family, J. Gibson (business), Walter Rosenhain, Clara Stockfeld, Eva Blashki, Rose Blashki, Minnie Blashki, Jeanette Krakowski, Ada Krakowski, Kitty Lunday, Amy and Evie Corrie and Rose Schield.
- Biography/History:

Soldier, engineer and administrator. John Monash was born in Melbourne in 1865 and died there in 1931. He attended Scotch College and the University of Melbourne where he studied law, arts and engineering. He commenced his military career in 1887. He was promoted to major general during the First World War when on active service on the western front. In 1919, he was made G.C.M.G. for military services in France and Flanders. Following the war, in Australia, Monash was prominent in civilian life including as an advocate for returned soldiers and through his involvement in a number of public and private organisations. He was the recipient of several awards and decorations from universities and foreign governments. Monash University in Melbourne is named in his honour.
