This text discusses the possiblility of a Chinese, rather than European, 'discovery' of Australia.Wei states that both China and Australia have similar climatic conditions. He assumes that the discovery of a statue of the Chinese god of longevity testifies to early Chinese arrival in Australia. However, the author hastens to add that the excavation was not an archaeological one and that solitary (dubious) evidence is unreliable. It could be possible that the Chinese discovered Australia, but there is no reliable evidence to support this view. Because there is no direct evidence, the author investigates citations from 167 Classics that refer to Australia, or describe countries that seem to resemble Australia. He begins with the Chunqiu. The 'Postface' to the book states exactly the opposite to the Chinese 'Preface'.This is a very interesting unique book that probably says more about Chinese Ethnocentrism and the Chinese reaction to the "White Australia Policy," than about Australia in Asia.
