MS 8083 includes material about Kelly's farm in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, War Service Land Settlement Scheme, 1945-1947, Bureau of Agricultural Economics, 1948-1960, and the Beef Roads Scheme, 1961-1964; also photographs, newspaper cuttings, articles, interviews and Kelly's writings on his life. Several series cover published and unpublished works on all aspects of his careers. Research material for unfinished works is also included. Although described as the political father of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, very few papers are available to record his interest and involvement in this scheme (66 boxes).
The Acc12.008 instalment comprises papers relating to Kelly's life, writing and career. It includes personal and business correspondence; personal records such as Kelly's curriculum vitae and will; employment records; papers relating to his war service; papers relating to his membership of the Australian Journalists' Association; papers relating to his participation in the United Country Party; a typescript draft titled "Adventure in Northern Australia: economic survey of the beef cattle industry", 1948-1973 (110 p.); a partial draft of a chapter from an autobiography titled "Reflections and recollections"; paperwork related to compensation for work-related vision loss; and, early newspaper cuttings on a proposed Country Water Scheme, 1938-1939 (2 boxes).

Soldier, farmer, local government councillor, agricultural economist, agrarian reformer and industrial consultant. After serving in the AIF, John Henry (Jack) Kelly farmed a block in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area from 1919-1940 as part of the Soldier Settlement Scheme, taking an active part in promoting improvements to this, and the Snowy Mountains Scheme. He served in the RAAF from 1941-1944. From 1945-1947 he was involved in the War Service Land Settlement Scheme, and in 1948 joined the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, where he surveyed and published works on the cattle industry in Northern Australia until 1960. He received the sobriquet "Kelly of the North" for this work. He was involved in the Beef Roads Scheme and spent the remainder of his life writing about his experiences and findings.
