Summary

James (Jim) Maher was a long serving official of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Trades Union (SDA). Maher discusses some events which were newsworthy in his day; the organisational problems of shop assistants' unionism; his philosophy as a union leader; he comments on the industrial and political events associated with the 1950s 'split' in the Australian Labor Party (ALP); being identified with the anti-communist Right.

Maher gives an account of his boyhood and early working life; his years as a union organiser in country Victoria revealing beliefs and values common among Australians at that time, but less evident today; he discusses the modern trend towards careerism in the trade union movement and in political life; the disappearance of service in the retail industry; his service to workers in the retail industry.
