Paul Abbott speaks about his work responsibilities for the training functions of STEPS (Southern Training and Employment Solutions), based in Franklin, Tas.; STEPS Board's decision to purchase the Shipwrights' Point School of Wooden Boatbuilding; his role as caretaker manager of The Wooden Boat Centre which incorporates the School, the Visitor's Centre and Marina until the Centre operations becomes economically viable; the tourist operations of The Centre; a brief history of the Marina; the curriculum for the boatbuilding school; the availability of suitable timber resources for boatbuilding and the need to ensure a sustainable continuing supply; the composition of students; the Centre's participation in community and outreach activities; the need for sponsorship to undertake the building of new boats at the School.
Abbott recalls his family background in England; migrating to Australia (1958); his father's work, a French polisher by trade in Nottingham, England who went on to establish his own business at Longley restoring antiques; his early education in Claremont, Tas. and Hobart; his Bachelor of Arts in English and Diploma of Education studies at the University of Tasmania; his 15 year teaching experience; life in the Huon Valley (1970s-1980s); his experiences working with youth unemployment schemes and labour market programs; his early work for the Wooden Boat School (1993); his work as training coordinator for Huon Skills Training (mid 1990s); the early financial support for the management and development of the Wooden Boat Centre with the prime purpose of maintaining old traditions; unemployment concerns for the Huon Valley.
