Emeritus Professor Donald Metcalf, biomedical scientist was appointed to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research (Melbourne) in the mid-1950s and was made Head of the Cancer Research Unit at the Institute in 1965, a position he held until 1996. He was admitted to the Order of Australia in 1976 and made a Companion of the Order in 1993. He has received many international and national prizes and awards, including the Australian Prime Minister's Prize for Science in 2001.
