Biography/History

Prof. Sutherland, research scientist and retired director of the Dept. of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics, Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital (1975-Mar. 2002). He has guided the development of his Dept. from a diagnostic service with five staff to its current position as Australia's leading diagnostic and research group in human genetics with more than 80 staff. He developed methods to allow the reliable observation of fragile sites on chromosomes. These studies culminated in the recognition of fragile X syndrome as the most common familial form of mental retardation.
