Summary

These key plates (or pattern plates) are pre-publication impressions, most without titles or other engraved inscriptions. They have been hand coloured, possibly by the artist, and have written comments, probably by Gould. They were used as a reference by the colourists of the published prints.

Biography/History

The 3 volume work Mammals of Australia was published in 13 parts from 1845 to 1863 and included a total of 179 prints.

Cover title.

Attribution: the published plates are inscribed either "J.Gould and H.C. Richter del et lith" or "H.C. Richter del et lith"; with "Hullmandel & Walton Imp".

Some of the key plates have hand-written inscriptions, probably by Gould, referring to colours or other artistic details.

Condition: generally worn due to handling, some on secondary backing paper, some patched.

The 23 plates have "Crommelin gift" stamped on reverse (see file 204/04/00060).
