Margaret Reardon was a resident of Pierce's Creek forestry settlement from 1973 until the January 2003 bushfires destroyed her home. She discusses her husband John Reardon's employment as a forestry worker from 1973; his retrenchment in 2001; his illness at the time of the fires; living in an Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government house following the fires; their cottage being one of 13 existing ACT Housing cottages; how all but one was destroyed; the loss of forestry depot buildings; Pierce's Creek residents association with forestry work; the residents being assured that they could stay in their houses; the memorial trees being damaged by the fire; the residents organising a clean-up activity and planning for replanting; the resurrection of an old entrance garden.
Reardon speaks about the forestry settlement residents and their concerns; the state of the forest; the loss of accumulated knowledge and experience of fire fighters; that January 2003 was a disaster waiting to happen; her representing the issues for residents; following the ACT Coronial Inquiry into the bushfires; mentions her feelings about the Inquiry.
