- Summary:
-
"Pre-1900 depictions of outback Queensland are particularly rare. This work is especially interesting in that it celebrates the opening of a known outback hotel and the painter has illustrated the goings-on of the day with an amazingly naive charm. George Ward took over as licensee of the Queensland Hotel in 1887 from Mrs Brooker. The hotel was situated in the township of Roma, 300 miles north west of Brisbane, and this work was almost certainly painted to celebrate the opening under the new owner. Roma at the time was primarily a vineyard and grazing district. It had a population of 1700 people and according to the Queensland Post Office Directory, George Ward's Hotel was one of thirteen that serviced the citizens in the town."--Auction catalogue: Deutscher-Menzies, Sydney, 10-11 March 2004, Lot 380.
