TAPE 1: Koula Bitsis, a Greek community broadcaster in Melbourne, Vic. recalls her early years in Epiros, Greece; her family's emigration to Australia, 1956, their arrival and early years in Melbourne, Vic.; her enrolment at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) to learn English; her job at the local shop/newsagency selling Greek books; the local shop, a base for the Melbourne Greek community, providing Greek election results, Athens newspapers, records, various social and welfare services for newly arrived migrants; her appointment to the Greek radio programme at Colac (Vic.) radio station, 1958; bilingual programmes; gaining radio time on 3KZ station, Melbourne (ACTU owned); Odeon Music House, Sydney, late 1950s; EMI Records (Australia); W and G recordings; promoting local Greek musicians, writers and newspapers on radio. TAPE 2: Koula Bitsis speaks about the importance of music to the Greek community; 3XY programmes; radio audiences; programming different forms of music, rebetika; dimotiko traghoudhi; solo bouzouki; Greek newspapers relation to the programmes; co-broadcasters; charity programmes.
TAPE 3: Koula Bitsis, talks about her sense of responsibility to her audience; 3XY gave time to Greek and Italian broadcasters; Greek programmes ended in 1969, other stations would not give time; visiting musicians, entrepreneurs, visit of Kazantzithis (famous Greek musician visiting Australia); chair of Greek at Melbourne University; electric radios in the 1950s and 1960s. TAPE 4: Koula Bitsis, recalls her job with 3EA in 1978; meeting community leaders; planning format of new programmes; fulfilling needs of the community; specific programmes on 3EA; region-based programmes; interviewing members of the community.
