"Therese Yien of Strathfield is an Australian citizen. Each Saturday evening, she distributes material in Sydney's Chinatown to draw attention to the violence she says is still being perpetrated against Falun Gong members in China. Falun Gong is more properly known as 'Falun Dafa'. In November 1999, she alleges she was reading a book about Falun Gong on a Hong Kong to Beijing train and was arrested with 11 other people by about 70 soldiers, detained and beaten. She says she escaped from the punishment block by jumping from a 3rd storey window. She went to the Australian Embassy where the Chinese guard alerted the authorities. She was returned to the punishment block but after intervention by Australian diplomatic officials was the next day deported to Australia. "Many, many people are still being persecuted in China, just for being Falun Gong. I feel strongly they are just like my family", she says."--Acquisition documentation.
