"The NSW police arrested gay and lesbians in the street scuffle that was the first Mardi Gras in 1978. Since then there has been a gradual change in the attitude by police helped by special liaison personel. In 1998 the police marched for the first time to tremendous crowd support and they have continued to march each year since. Their attitude is now quite relaxed." --William Yang.
