Brown talks about his family background; childhood in Sydney; early influences; children's books and comic strips; Jannali Boys' High School; interest in history and drawing at school and political arguments in the home. He then talks about working as copy boy for News Limited - "Mirror", "Telegraph" and "Australian"; cadet in "Telegraph" Art Dept.; illustrations and caricatures for "Australian"; move to Wollongong to work on "Illawarra Mercury"; advertising and illustrations; editorial page cartoon 'Warren on Saturday'; comic strip; style influence of Frank Benier and job at "Daily Mirror" on Benier's recommendation. Brown then talks about competition between "Mirror" and "Sun"; merging of "Mirror" and "Telegraph"; cartooning for "Telegraph"; themes; importance of the idea; censorship and self-censorship and Australia's black and white art.
