Wayne Harrison born in East Melbourne in 1953 speaks about his childhood and family; learning to tap dance; being a child and teenage star performing on stage and television; J.C. Williamsons' musicals; the age of 'imported' musicals coming to an end; abandoning his career as a performer and moving to Sydney in 1975; in 1977 enrolling at University of New South Wales (UNSW) Theatre Studies Department; completing an Honours Degree; working on the magazine "Campaign"; opening "The Bookshop" in Darlinghurst; visiting London in 1980; his meeting with Richard Wherrett, then Artistic Director of the recently formed Sydney Theatre Company (STC) in Sydney; becoming the literary adviser for the company; his taking over from Wherrett as Artistic Director of the STC in 1990.
Harrison recalls the period of nine years as Artistic Director, STC; the subscription list growing to 20,000 during his time; leaving the STC; being based in London at present; working for Back Row, a theatrical production company; he comments on his own career path; his views about what makes a good artistic director; speaks in detail on the achievements of his predecessor at the STC, Richard Wherrett.
