- Biography/History:

Historian, academic, writer and editor. John Douglas Ritchie was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts, Australian National University, in 1969, acting dean of the Faculty of Arts in 1986 and Emeritus Professor, upon his retirement in 2002. As general editor of the Australian dictionary of biography, Ritchie edited volumes 12-15 and co-edited volume 16. Ritchie's other publications include, Australia as once we were (1975), Lachlan Macquarie: a biography (1986), and The Wentworths: father and son (1997 and 1999). In 2001 Ritchie was awarded the Centenary Medal and in 2002 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service in recording the history of the social sciences and the humanities in Australia as general editor of the Australian dictionary of biography.
