Professor Gregory, a foremost Australian economist whose ground breaking work on international trade and import demand functions (the Gregory thesis) propelled him to national and international prominence in the early 1970s and who since developed as a leading social economist whose research has focused on questions relating to the labour market, unemployment, social, regional, household and individual inequality, equal pay, women in the labour force, and comparative national and overseas labour market studies including USA, UK, Japan and China.

Professor Gregory joined the Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University in 1969 as a Research Fellow, subsequently Senior and Professional Fellow and Professor of Economics and Director of Economic Policy Research in 1987, and was appointed Head of the Division of Economics and Politics in 1990. He held earlier posts as First Assistant Commissioner, Industries Assistance Commission, Canberra in 1973-1975, and member of the Board of Management, Institute of Family Studies 1989-1991, a member of the Australian Science and Technology Council until mid 1980, and from 1985-1995 was a member of the Board of the Reserve Bank of Australia.
