The papers of Elkin cover a broad time period. Included are an almost complete set of pocket diaries from 1917-1978; newspaper cuttings relating to Elkin's early church and academic careers; personal papers, such as certificates, personal notes and correspondence; photographs; books; and some papers relating to his wife, Sara Thompson, and his son Peter Kingsley Elkin. Correspondents to Peter Elkin include Les Murray and Bruce Dawe.

Anthropologist and Anglican priest, Elkin was Head of the Department of Anthropology at Sydney University from 1934-1956, and held a number of professional and academic memberships. His main area of study was the anthropology of Australian Aboriginal people, with a focus also on the people of Papua New Guinea. He was also the editor of Oceania (1933-1979).
